This course defines irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and discusses the epidemiology of IBS in the United States. The pathophysiology of IBS is explained and the appropriate criteria for making the diagnosis of IBS are detailed. Diagnostic features of IBS are compared and contrasted with co-existing or alternative disorders while therapies and treatment are discussed.
